What is your relationship to creativity?
For me, creativity isn’t about making something perfect or impressive- it’s about the process. It’s in those moments when I’m completely in it, not thinking about the result. I love when I can get my hands dirty, literally- whether it's painting, doing ceramics, baking, or just messing around with an idea. That’s when I feel most grounded and connected to myself. I’m not worrying about if it turns out “right.” I’m just present, following whatever feels interesting in the moment. It’s about feeling, experimenting, and allowing the unexpected. Creativity is freedom. It’s presence. It’s the joy of being in motion without needing to know where I’ll end up.
How do you incorporate creative practice into your life? Do you have a favorite way to express yourself creatively?
Right now, in this season of life with young kids, it can be hard to find time just for my own creative space. But I’ve found so much joy in being creative with my kids. They approach art with so much freedom and openness. So many of us lose this as adults. They don’t hesitate or worry about getting it “right.” Watching them dive in without fear has been really inspiring - and doing art with them has become one of my favorite creative outlets. I could look at children’s artwork all day! They are all about the process- it’s such a natural form of expression for them. It reminds me of how creativity is really about exploration, not perfection. We will often lay out a large piece of raw canvas or butcher paper and just paint together. No structure- just using each other’s lines as starting points and continuing to build together. We put on music, use a variety of materials like tempera paints, watercolors and pastels and create. It’s a time when I feel fully present and connected with my kids. To me, this is the greatest gift!
What are some things you enjoy doing that support your wellbeing? Are there benefits you feel from it that you'd like to share?
So many things help to support my wellbeing! Moving my body whether that’s walking, doing yoga or having a dance party with my kids always boosts my energy and mood. Reading a book in a quiet and uncluttered space always resets me. Doing ceramics or making something with my hands recharges my spirit and helps me feel more connected to myself. With less time for myself these days, I’ve realized how much quality over quantity matters. Short stints of “me time” helps to reinvigorate and I can return to my family in a much more calm and serene state. It’s essential.
