What does creativity mean to you?
Creativity is following your heart and doing something that makes you glow from the inside. It doesn't have to be a tactile creative process like a traditional art practice. That is a beautiful form of creativity, but that is definitely not my creative practice. My creative practice involved movement, things like swimming or walking or working in the garden. It involves working and creating a vision of something that I want to see evolve. A plant, a garden a project. Creativity is the way that I plan my day, week, month or year. I've even been creative by drawing out my college education and creating an educational plan that included a year traveling the length of South America, a semester hitchhiking around North Africa, and also getting all of my pre-med requirements completed.
How do you incorporate creative practice into your life? Do you have a favorite way to express yourself creatively?
It comes and it goes, and isn't necessarily a part of my daily practice. I could do go weeks without really tapping into my creative side, and then spend a few days doing nothing other than working in the garden, planting seeds, or writing a children's book. I get very focused on things and very passionate very quickly, and if I start something, I need to finish it. So I give myself space and allowance if I haven't felt as creatively inspired as I'd like, because I know it comes in waves.
What are some things you enjoy doing that support your wellbeing? Are there benefits you feel from it that you'd like to share?
I'd say swimming is the most nourishing part of my life. That and taking care of animals. Swimming for me is a complete meditation, a different element that I can be in, and a way for my mind to wander, explore and expand. Maybe it is what fuels my own creativity. And taking care of animals allows me to feel more at home on planet earth. I feel so deeply connected to animals that when I spend more time with them, I feel more a part of this earth and less in my mind. It really grounds me.
